A strong, spicy and penetrating oil, indigenous to the Molucca Islands and Indonesia, although also cultivated in Zanzibar, Madagascar and Java, nowadays much of the oil is from Sri Lanka. Valued for its medicinal properties by the Greeks, Romans and Chinese, the latter chewing Cloves to ease toothache and sweeten the breath. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the buds. Large scale use pharmaceutical use recognises its antiseptic and bactericidal properties.
Chemical composition is Furfurol, Methyl salicytate, Eugenol, Caryophyllene and Pinene.
A very potent oil that can have a positive and stimulating effect on the mind, lifting depression and uplifting when lethargic, valuable for disinfecting the atmosphere during infectious illness.
