A small thorny evergreen tree, native to India, though grown anywhere the climate is suitable, it has shiny oval leaves with white to pink strongly perfumed flowers. The oil is extracted from the peel by expression or distillation, the greener fruits producing the finer oils. Long used as an antiseptic against bites from disease carrying insects, lemon is derived from the Arabic 'laimum' and Persian 'limum' and was one of the treasures brought back by the Crusaders. The fresh fruit is a valuable source of Vitamin C and is an energising and refreshing oil.
Its chemical make up is Linalool, Citral, Citronellal, Cadinene, Bisabolene, Camphene, Dipentene, Limonene, Pinene and Phellandrene.
